Tecno Phantom X review
This is the techno phantom x a mid-range
a phone that could put techno on the map
outside of their established African fan
base since it's also being released in
certain other markets.
does the phantom x have what it takes to
compete with those heavy-hitting
mid-rangers that we've seen so far this
year.
and will for gsm marina and let's find
out in our full review.
the techno phantom x brings a premium
design of curved glass.
with a sharp aluminum frame and a catchy
gradient finish
the surface has a pinstripe texture
etched into it which doesn't add a whole
a lot of grips
actually but feels interesting and hides
smudges too.
if you want even more grip and
protection there's a cool looking case
that comes in the box
though it doesn't cover the
edges of the phone.
this is probably because of the phantom
x's curved display
it's a 6.7-inch OLED with gorilla glass
5 protection
a 1080p resolution and a fast 90 hertz
refresh rate
also notable here is the wide cutout for
the dual selfie cameras
a 48-megapixel main cam and an 8
megapixel ultra-wide
overall this screen is just okay it has
deep OLED blacks and good sharpness but
we had a few issues with it overall
the wide cutout is a bit distracting
colors aren't very accurate
leaning towards bluish and the
brightness is on the lower side for this
type of display
we were able to measure a maximum of 405
nits with a slider
with no option for an auto mode boost
not enough to be comfortable on a
sunny day
and about the high refresh rate if you
choose 90 hertz it'll work fine across
the UI
and apps but won't adapt to save energy
and if you choose auto mode instead
this dials basically everything
down to 60 hertz
except for the UI, the phantom x has just
a single bottom-firing speaker for your
audio
it did score very good on our loudness
charts but the sound quality are nothing
special
there isn't much bass and you get
distortion at higher volumes
the phantom x does have a 3.5 millimeter
jack for headphones and FM radio support
too
you can wake up and unlock the phone
with an under-display fingerprint reader
and it's reasonably fast and accurate
and there's plenty of space on the phone
too you get 256 gigs of built-in storage
and it's expandable on top of that the
the interface of the phantom x is techno's
own
high os based on android 11. it's not
too heavy of a skin
pretty close to stock android
besides the looks of the icons
there is an app drawer to keep your apps
in and it has a unique aesthetic
one strange quirk is that you can't
swipe down to close it you need to use
navigation controls to get back to the
home screen
ios has its virtual assistant called
Ella
though we didn't find that it offered
much of an advantage over google
assistant
and there is a game mode menu which
provides you better control over
notifications and incoming calls while
you're playing a game
at the heart of the techno phantom, x is
a MediaTek helio g95 chipset
built on a 12-nanometer process it's a
the mid-range chip that was introduced last
year
and in the benchmark charts, it does fall
behind mid-range competitors
running on snapdragon 700 series chips
but it still does a decent job
providing for smooth UI performance and
lighter gaming
it seems to be rather a power-efficient
too the phantom x has a 4700 milliamp
hour battery
and with it was able to score a great
122-hour endurance rating in our
proprietary tests
the phone comes with a 33-watt charger
and charging speed is solid
but not blazing fast we were able to
charge the dead battery to 56 percent
in half an hour all right on to the
cameras
the techno phantom x has three cameras
on the back a 50-megapixel quad Bayer
main cam
a 13 megapixel two times telephoto cam
and an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera
the main cams photos come out at 12.5
megapixels
and the quality is far from impressive
sharpness is okay for the class
and dynamic range is relatively wide too
however

Tecno Phantom X review
a number of our photo samples came out
overexposed or with random blurry spots
here and there
but it's the color rendition that's the
worst offender colors are either muted
or just plain off
with only the occasional photo coming
outright
it's nice to see a telephoto cam at this
price and its two-times zoom shots are
decent
they have enough sharpness and are pretty
good dynamic range colors are vibrant
too
but that isn't consistent with the main
cams rendition
8-megapixel photos from the ultra-wide
cam is lackluster
they're soft with a narrow dynamic range
and washed out colors
at least the distortion correction does
a good job
because the ultra-wide has autofocus it
can also shoot close-up macro photos
these still have those bland colors but
the level of detail here is better than
competitors which employ dedicated
lower res macro cams
for some reason after the sun went down
the main cams performance was much more
impressive than during the day
even in auto mode, there's some image
stacking going on here
and as a result of the processing the
photos are crisp and clear
with good detail and balanced shadows
and highlights
there's good contrast and fairly
accurate colors
if you turn on the super night mode it
will take care of the clipped highlights
around light sources
brighten up the shadows boost the color
saturation
and add some extra sharpness to the quality
is nice but perhaps a bit artificial
looking
zooming with the telephoto cam at night
results in muddy and noisy photos that
have blown-out highlights
and they're lacking in detail there's no
night mode support here
using the ultra-wide cam at night also
results in poor photos which are
extremely soft or even blurry
there's plenty of noise dynamic range is
narrow and colors are dull
and again there's no night mode now on
to the dual selfie cameras
the main one does a great job taking
selfies with excellent sharpness and
detail
wide dynamic range with hdr enabled and
good exposure for the subject's face
the ultrawide selfie cam offers you that
wider field of view you may want in
certain situations
and dynamic range is good however these
photos are soft and lacking in detail
videos can be recorded from the main
a rear camera and up to 4k resolution at
30fps
there is good contrast and wide dynamic
the range however this isn't the sharpest 4k
footage around
the telephoto can shoot only in 1080p
the resolution we like the colors and the
low noise
but the footage looks to be over
sharpened and with too much contrast
the ultrawide cam's 1080p video is also
rather soft and has dull colors
narrow dynamic range and not a lot of
detail there is electronic stabilization
available on all three cameras
and it does a decent job however it only
works at a maximum of 1080p resolution
so that's the Tecno phantom x you get a
great looking glass and metal build
a curved high refresh rate OLED screen
great battery life
and solid charging speed and chipset
performance plus the camera setup is
quite versatile with three cameras on
the back
and two on the front however there are
some things we weren't fans of here
the most notable being that the screen
isn't very bright
plus the camera performance is all over
the place quality-wise
and there are competitors with more
powerful chipsets if you don't mind
those things then the phantom x is a
decent phone.
